This is an oak school desk from the early to mid-1900s
sorry now sold.
The desk has been refurbished removing the majority of the markings left by numerous children.
Some markings have been left for authenticity, particularly the notes inside stating the date and time of the nuclear disarmament treaty between USA and Russia.
The desk is made from solid oak with a latch on the rear to allow for adjustment to a writing slope.
The top shows a chess board of Walnut and Maple veneer trimmed with braided brass.
The veneer was cut by hand using a veneer saw, first cutting strips of Walnut and strips of Maple lengthways before placing them in rows and cross cutting form dark and light strips which were then sealed to the desk top
The brass has been braided using a bench vice and a hand drill, then placed in a small groove around the chess board giving it a unique finish.
